Last Blog Post

Room 17 filled with PRIDE,
But now this is our final ride,
Now it’s time to head out the door,
and then let your mind soar,
My time is up all my friends,
But our friendship will never end,

One of my favourite parts of the year was going to the year 6 social. It was wonderful. It was really fun learning lots of new moves. My favourite was Wellington Cuddle. Paige and I got sixth place in the partner rock and roll and first place for back to back, sit on the knee or proposing.
Another thing I liked was the mathletics. I was able to make 2 amazing creations better than the ones I made last year. I also enjoyed coming second in the New South Wales math test.
But out of all these amazing things, the thing I liked most was making new friends.

As soon as the school year started,
I’d hoped that we never parted,
Although we leave this class,
In our hearts it’s spirit won't pass,
One day we’ll meet again,

you will forever be my friends.

The Curse Of Feram Elementary

Part 1

The air around me turned black. They were near. I ran and ran. Then I saw the shack I must stop them. I froze. They caught me. I my nails got sharper, my hand turned red. The red started consuming me. The clouds swirled around me like a tornado. By now the red was up to my neck. I was going to turn into one of them, a death bringer.

“Mum, do we have to move house!”
“Yes honey, this costs to much,” I hate moving house. All the unpacking, driving you know all that stuff. But this was worse. We were moving to a whole new town. It wasn’t that big. There was a sign that said “WELCOME TO FERAM”, a library, a cafe, a row of old house’s, a farm, a school but there was an unusual looking hill. There was just something about it that gave me the creeps. I looked around. There was a shack. It was old and run down. I looked carefully into the window of the shack from the car. There was a red figure with boney fingers and sharp nails.
“Where here, our new house!” Instantly I hated it. There was smashed glass, holes in the walls, cracks in the roofs. But the worse thing of all was the fact that we lived there.

I raced inside to see if was any better. But It wasn’t any better. Cobwebs everywhere, doors coming off of there hinges and smashed lights. I found a old bed with torn sheets and went to sleep.

How To Safe Cycle

Why cycle? Cycling is a fun activity fit for the whole family but you must be safe. This report will tell you how to be safe on the road, the safety checks for a bike and other useful tips for cycling.

Before you go riding it helps to have a sheet of paper describing what it looks like incase it gets stolen. First write down the design and creators of your bike. Also write down the different colors of it. Then turn your bike upside down and you will find an ID code. It would be better if you bought a bike with the ID code engraved into it other than just stuck on because a robber could scratch it off. Just incase write down the markings you have made on it. Whether it's stickers or scratches it helps to write them down.

When you cycle it would be good to wear clothes that will help. To be seen while cycling wear a bright shirt or jacket. You also have to wear a properly fitted helmet. It must be the right size and in good condition. To check that it is properly on get someone to whack it while it is on your head. If it moves you need to tighten it, if stays put it’s fine. Incase you fall over try wear some elbow and knee pads because that is where people get hurt on bikes most. Lastly tie on some broken in sneakers. If you go barefoot the pedals will hurt you.

Now for the safety checks. Firstly to be able to move make sure that the tyres are pumped. Check for any rust on your bike. Rust could make you bike ride bad wherever it is. Make sure every joint isn't loose otherwise it could come apart at any second. To make sure the gears are working hop on your bike and get someone to watch you. While doing this, change the gear if the chain moves up or down it works if not, you need to get it checked by a professional. Now check that you have light reflectors on your pedals and wheels. The reflector on the back wheel should be red or orange other wise people in cars will think you are another car coming towards them. When you sit down check that the seat is at the right angle and height because if it is uncomfortable you might go off track and crash. Now flip the bike over and spin both wheels and pull the brakes. If they stop that's great if they don’t you need to get them checked.

Now you need to learn the rules for when you’re out on the road. Stick to the bike track, if there isn't one go to the car park. To avoid being hurt you need to learn the arm signals. To tell someone your going left put your left arm out. If you want to go right put you right arm out. To stop put your fingers together bend your hand up and put your arm out in front of you. Also remember to pull your brakes to let cars and pedestrians past. If you want to pass a parked car or another biker always look to your left. If there is no cars behind you you can pass but if there is wait for it to pass. Also remember to check for people coming out of driveways and cars.

Now you know how to be safe on the road. Did you know if you bike for a hour you burn 600 calories. That's 100 calories every 10 minutes! If you want to keep your bike extra protected buy a bike lock. You can buy ones that have codes or keys. If you buy one that has a code always scramble the numbers up.  If you have one that uses a key, keep the key with you or hidden. If you are practicing on the footpath, buy a bell. It will help get people out of the way.

Balloon In A Bottle

Can you blow up a balloon in a bottle?  This experiment answers that question. You can also use this science experiment to trick and amaze people.
Materials:
1 Bottle
1 Balloon
1 Nail

Procedure:
  1. Strap the balloon on to the mouth of the bottle so that the rest of the balloon is inside the bottle.
  2. Now blow into the balloon. It should be quite difficult.
  3. Stick the nail into the bottle anywhere around the sides.
  4. Now blow up the balloon. It should be much easier.
  5. Now put your finger onto the hole. You should notice that the balloon shrinks.

Why it happens:
Once you seal the bottle with the balloon the air particles are trapped in it needing lot’s of space. When you blow into the balloon they take back the space. But when you put the hole in it they have more space to go. Once you put your finger on the hole the need the space making the balloon shrink.

So the answer depends on if you’ve got a hole in it or not. Remember there are many more fun and exciting experiments like this and lots of them just use things that you can find around the house.

Ping Pong Hair Dryer

Today my class tried an experiment to learn about gravity and force.
The gear we needed was a hair dryer and some ping pong balls.
First we made predictions for what will happen if we put a ping pong ball on a running hair dryer. Mine was that the ball would float and then fall off. We flicked the hair dryer one and put the ping pong ball on. It kept bobbing all around the place. It stayed on until we turned it off. So I was right about it floating but not it falling.
It is caused by the force of the hair dryer fighting against gravity. The gravity causes it to move around and not go up high. But the hair dryer keeps it up. It doesn't fall because of the amount of air surrounding it is bigger than the ping pong ball.

Science Report

Splitting Procedure
& Explanation
Materials:
2 x lemonade or coke bottles,
2 x  large buckets
2 x normal shaped balloons
Hot water
Cold water

  1. First pour the hot water into 1 of the buckets about half way, do the same with the cold water and the other bucket.
  2. Now strap the balloons onto the mouths of the bottles.
  3. Now to start the experiment make the bottles completely immersed in the water.
  4. Now observe the two different balloons. The balloon in the hot water will start to rise and the other won’t. The balloon that is in the cold water might start to shrivel.

Why It Happens

It is caused by the air particles. In the cold water they are in a state of inertia. But in the hot water they need to expand. They move around looking for more space causing them to move into the balloon. When they expand, the balloon expands.

Science Report Draft

What happens when you immerse trapped air in hot and cold water? This is an experiment to figure out the answer to this question. Later on this report will say how to do the experiment and what equipment it needs while explaining while what happens, happens.

The equipment this experiment will need to perform this is two coke or lemonade bottles, two normal balloons, hot and cold water and two large buckets. First pour the hot water into one of the buckets and the cold water into the other. Then strap the balloons onto the mouths of the bottles. When every step is done the balloon will blow up.

Now the  to complete the experiment make the bottles completely immersed in the water. Immersing something means surrounding something. The reason it needs to completely immerse the bottle is because if it only put half of it it will do nothing or it will go very slowly.

Put one bottle into the cold water and the hot water. Now observe the two different balloons. The balloon in the hot water will start to rise and the other won’t. The balloon that is in the cold water might start to shrivel.

This is caused by the air particles. In the cold water they are in a state of inertia. But in the hot water they need to expand. They move around looking for more space causing them to move into the balloon. When they expand, the balloon expands.

So what happens when you immerse trapped air in hot and cold water? The answer is it expands in hot water and does nothing in cold water. So that is how to do this experiment. Here is a diagram to understand what you can’t see.

Reflection for Art, Math and Music

Art
I have learnt the difference between just putting things on a page and making a pattern. .
I have improved in ideas for it because I was lost for ideas and then an amazing one came along
I am proud of my skateboard art because I think I did really well on it and put a lot of effort in it.
I have enjoyed having lessons with Mrs Morton because she taught us lots of different techniques.

Maths
I have learnt more techniques for helping me using a compass.
I have improved my knowledge for techniques in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
I am proud of winning the mathematics competition 2013.
I enjoyed training for the mathematics because some of the questions were sneaky and puzzling.

Music
I have learnt every note on the violin this year.
I have improved in reading notes because if I don’t bring my violin I learn about the notes.
I am proud of performing in class well because every now and then I ask to do it.
I enjoy listening to other people play because I can learn from them.

Optimist Yachting

Optimist yachting is an exciting and adventurous activity. It is nothing to be afraid of for it is just smooth sailing. In this report I will be telling you the key basics of yachting. I will also tell you what it is like, how to recover from a capsize and the parts to an optimist yacht.

The equipment you need might come in handy for when you yacht. The most important thing you need is the yacht. Otherwise you would be sitting in the water. Warm clothing is a great idea because if it is really windy you could get cold. On shore you will need a first aid kit packed with the right things because someone could get injured. You will also need something to contact someone else with because you might get stuck out at sea. Just to make it easier you should take a paddle because if you not catching any wind you will be stuck.

To be able to yacht you need to know the parts to your boat. The part to the yacht that need the most is the hull. The hull is the body of the boat and without it you will be sitting there with the sail and the tiller and you will need to catch a lot of wind. Another important thing you will need is the mast and the sail. You must tie the sail to the mast using a figure of 8 knot and then put the must into a round slot in the hull. Now you will need the tiller and the rudder. They should be attached to each other. You need to clip the rudder into a slot at the stern of the boat. The tiller is what steers your boat making the rudder move through the water. Lastly you will need a centreboard. The centreboard helps the boat not capsize, move to the side and makes it go faster.

Now I will tell you what it is like out there, when to do it if you want it calm or adventurous and give you a few tips. When you are out there it could be a bit scary but it is really fun and exciting. If you want it really scary and adventurous go out when it is really windy but if you want it calm and peaceful go out when there is only a little bit of wind. If you start to tip to one side lean to the side that is going higher so you can balance the boat. If you want to get back to  the shore and the wind is hitting the side leave the centreboard in until it hits the shore. This will make it harder for the wind to push you to the side.

If you don't want to capsize you better read this. Now I will tell you what it is like, how to prevent it and what to do if you are sinking. When you capsize  it may be a bit scary at first but it really isn’t. If you don’t want to capsize follow these instructions. When you want to swap places don't stand, crawl to get to the other spot. Make sure you have something to scoop the water out with otherwise it will be easier to sink. If you start to sink instead of capsizing, don't hop out of your boat. You may be waist high with water but if you hop out you will be neck high.

Now you need a safety check. Make sure you have a properly fitted life jacket. Don't make it too tight otherwise it will hurt. You must have proper shoes on because there might be glass all over the beach. You must check that all the knots are tied properly because you might sink or sit in the same spot. The buoyancy tank screws and bungs must be screwed in properly otherwise you will sink.

Hopefully this will help you for when you optimist yacht. Make sure the safety checks are all completed and you have the right equipment. If you want it adventurous go when it is windy unless go when it's calm. Thank you for reading.

Why You Should Go To Alaska

If you are trying to figure out where to go on your holiday, this will hopefully ease your mind. This is why you should go to alaska and not New Zealand. The wildlife is amazing, the theme parks are jaw dropping, the cruises are to die for and the northern lights are beautiful. These are only a little of the reasons why 1.5 million people visit Alaska each year.

You are able to watch the eagles soar through the sky, view bears catch some fish or get on a boat and go whale watching. Whatever it is Alaska’s wildlife has a lot in store. Their state animal is the Moose. They are rare to find anywhere else in the world. Male moose are called Bulls and female moose are called cows. Cows are pregnant for 8 months and a baby moose is called a calf. The calf will stay with their mother until they are 1 year old. Moose have 32 teeth and  none  of them upper front teeth.

The northern lights are a great sight to see. They are also called aurora borealis. Aurora is of the roman goddess of dawn and they changed the greek word boreas meaning north wind into borealis. The northern lights are caused by the suns wind hitting the earth's magnetic field. It normally occurs in September, October, March and April. They usually form ribbons, arcs, flares and spirals. The northern lights can also be seen on other planets such as Jupiter.

In Alaska there are lots of beautiful sights and tours. There are daily cruises going through the rivers of alaska moving through the ever shifting ice. On lots of cruises they give you a wide range of activities such as whale watching, fishing, hiking and much much more. You can grab a tour guide to help you through the mountains, there you can get great views of Alaska’s wildlife.. Some of the tours have had awards.

If you want to get rid of the kids for a day or have a mountain full of fun with them, this is the place for you. You can go to the H20asis, alaska's only indoor waterpark and one of the biggest in the united states of America. It has wave pools, lazy rivers, pirate ships, 505 feet long water slides and much much more. Visit the worlds largest chocolate fountain. It is 20 feet high and makes you want to jump into it. You can find it at Alaska wild berry theatre and park. You can see how candy is made and walk through the berry trail. After the long day you can go to the restaurant across the road. If you hanging of your chair by now, if I tell you everything you would be lying flat on the floor.

So if you want to see amazing wildlife, view the northern lights, have fun with the kids and visit the theme parks remember Alaska’s the place to go, so get packing!

The Wolf In The Wardrobe Book Report

The Wolf In The Wardrobe is a story written by Susan Brocker. It is a story about a boy named Finn who is delivering paper runs and finds a wolf crossing the road and a car accidentally ran over the wolf named Lupa who escaped from the circus. He takes her home getting past his victim of alzheimer's disease nana named Eva, and his mother and snuck her into his wardrobe. But a clown named Cackles is on the hunt for Lupa... How will Finn cope with everything happening around him?

Then everything goes bad. He lets out that he has a wolf at school. The pound comes around reporting about a seen dog not being registered. Eva brings Lupa to Finns rugby game and his mother finds out and Cackles is just around the corner...

Out of 10, I would rate it 9.8/10.

I like it because it isn’t obvious what's going to happen. My favourite character is Eva because of her alzheimers disease. She calls Finn Danny and Lupa Molly. Her alzheimers disease makes her put stuff in the most ridiculous places. She also blurts out random words. She is the humour of the story.

This book is a spiritual, action book that will make you want to keep reading.

My Report On Mrs Roil

Mrs Roil
My teacher is the most fun and creative teacher I’ve met. Although her hair at the top is her hair is light gold when it gets lower it's golden brown. The waviness of her hair sometimes creates a bob. It is sometimes messed up by her hands running through her hair. It is hard to find her without a pair of sunglasses or reading glasses on top of her head. Her clothes are usually dark colors such as black, purple and grey. In the winter she usually wears a scarf. She tends to wear striped or plain clothes. When she’s working she puts on a poker face not showing if she’s sad or excited. Her eyes sparkle the color of the sea far away. She has a couple of small pimples on her cheeks. Her skin tone is light pink with a bit of yellow.

Mrs Roils personality is as fun as a carnival. Although she does try to coax us into doing subjects she is still  amazingly fun. Every day she takes out for a game. Even when we don’t order the gear in time we would play a different game. She likes getting involved and having a laugh. The only reason she shouts is because she wants the best for us.

In the morning everyone greets Mrs Roil enthusiastically. When she asks if people want to share their work hands  shoot up like a rocket. She loves to help and she gives everyone a go. Everyone around the school loves coming to our room. She only sends us away if we did something really really bad. If were really good she would give us treats. Although she gives us treats she still really wants us to be quiet. She gives us feedback and positive comments which makes us feel good.

As soon you walk into the classroom you can tell she loves art. Everywhere you look in the classroom there is some of our art. From word  art to computer art to abstract. She prints posters out to help us. She also gives us fun activities and games. She tells us her childrens funny stories to amuse us and help us. In the class you will find lots of retro furniture. If you are in her class get ready to have some fun!

Painting Using New Techniques

For the last couple of weeks we have been having art lessons from a teacher called Mrs Morton.

We have learnt new techniques of painting. They are smooth and even, shading, tinting, blending, dry brush, glaze wash, outline and impasto. Then we did art using those techniques. My Favorited technique is glaze wash. Here is mine. At the top is the glaze wash. Then dry brush using white. After that is smooth and even. The little mountain is dry brush sing black. Now outline. The rock is tinting.

The Windmill Farmer

Far far away in the country, in the middle of lots of bare and green mountains, in a rickety old house, my story was written.

I was plowing spots to grow windmills with a tired expression. I was starting to lag a bit. Finally, I was done. I grabbed out the first windmill seed. I blew it with hope that it would grow well. It spun beautifully. I carefully placed it in the first hole with a caring expression. I cautiously walked back placing another windmill in each hole. Finally, I was at my house. I glazed at the windmills giving them hope and love. I had a strong cup of tea and peacefully went to sleep.

A couple of weeks later I approached the windmills. I grasped my watering can and went down to the far one. I let the water stream down on to the windmill. I repeated it until I got to my hut. I put the watering can down. I turned around and glared at the windmills to find that one of them had slowed down. I brought up all of my might and pushed. It spun rapidly.

A week later I was relaxing with a cup of coffee. Outside there was a tiny pitter patter of rain. Then a flash of light came. Thunder. I heard something chopping. It was a windmill.

I ran outside to find a windmill cutting another windmill. The wind was so strong, even with my hat on tightly, my hat blew off. I jumped up grabbed it and with all my might I pushed the windmill up. I looked at the others. Then one had shred to pieces. I run towards it. Out of nowhere I got hit by a piece of a different windmill. I layed on the ground, crying, watching my windmills get torn to shreds.

Now it was winter. I was still mourning for my loss. There were shards of the windmills deep in the snow. I looked out the window. I thought I saw a shard growing but I was sure my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Spring came. I journeyed outside. My head low. I turn to where the windmills were to mourn. My mouth drops. My eyes wide open. There were windmills everywhere. My body started dancing without my mind not knowing, trying to figure out how it happened. Eventually my mind gave up trying to figure out. It was a miracle.

The Catch

I sat there. Bored out of my mind. I had a tired expression on my face. Then, suddenly, out of the corner of my eye the rod starts to wriggle. I jumped up, grabbed the fishing rod and I pulled and pulled and pulled. Finally, the fish came out of the water. It was tiny. I was so disappointed. I turned my head and look at the village. How could that little fish feed the whole village? Suddenly I heard a scream. I put the fish in my basket and walked towards the noise. It was a fox.

It glowed bright, golden red in the sunlight. It was stuck in a trap. I grabbed my knife. The  fox stared at me with his big brown eyes. He was scared of what I would do. I cut the rope. It jumped up. It looked at me with wide, angry eyes. It jumped at me. I fell on the ground, closed my eyes and waited for it to strike. Then it took a sniff. It’s eyes widened and stared into the bush. Then it  ran off.

I ran through the bush and found it sitting in front of the basket. I was defenseless. I looked at it with eyes reading don’t please. It took the fish. I stood there, nearly crying, it ran off. I had to do it for the village. I ran around the corner to find it crawling in blackberry bushes with gigantic prickles. I had to be brave. I looked over at the village. I had to do it for them.

I got down on my stomach and started crawling. I was really angry. I got, out jumped up but I fell. My pants were stuck to a vine. I was worried, I couldn’t let it get away. I tugged and tugged until it gave to my pull. I was relieved. I chased it, following the footprints. Then I saw it.

It was leaping up a cliff, I got angrier by the second. Finally, I was 1 jump away from the top. A gust of wind came. My hat flew off my head. I looked down. I couldn’t  stuff up now. I look up, I was furious. I jump up, I make it.

I stomped on my ground. The fox turned around to find me raging. It threw the fish away and I heard a splashed. I was puzzled. The fog move away. There was a golden sunset above a gigantic pond. Then a big shadow came. I look up. There was a gigantic fish. I was shocked and baffled.

I came back to the village with a medium sized fish and a gigantic fish, not as big as the one I saw but still big, and the fox. I threw him the smaller fish. I was pleased. I walk to the village. I looked back to catch a glimpse of the fox turning into dust. It’s job was done.

Master Chef Collage

At camp we had made a master chef. Everyone had to cook meals for the judges and their selves.
Congratulations to the Strikers for winning.
Here is a pic collage I made of it.

Masterchef

The part I liked best at camp was Master Chef.

Masterchef was created in the 1990’s by Franc Roddam. It was for the United Kingdom. In the year 2001 they stopped filming it. In 2005 it was revived. Now the competition is in over 40 different countries including China, Turkey and Italy. Occasionally they have special seasons such  as Masterchef Junior and Celebrity Masterchef.

On Wednesday one we had our own version of Masterchef so for the whole day we had to cook for ourselves.
We only had these ingredients:
Pancake Mix                  3 Potatoes
Instant Pudding      1 Onion
20 Slices Of Bread     1 Egg
12 Cheese Slices     2 Carrots
1 Can Of Spaghetti     1 Box Of Jelly
12 Saveloys     2 Packets Noodles
1 Can Of Pineapple Rings    1 Packet Of Gravy
1 Can Of Peaches                Mince
Honey
Our Menu Was:
Breakfast:
Pancakes with pineapple, peaches and honey made into a smiley face.
Lunch:
French toast with noodles and saveloys.
Dinner:
Meatballs with mashed potato and honey glazed carrots.
Dessert:
Pineapple filled jelly with instant pudding.

For breakfast our jobs were:
Jelly: Paige and George
Pancakes: JJ, Milly and I.
Presentation: Paige, Milly and I.

For the presentation we didn’t know what to do. Paige decided to carve out a smiley face but it didn’t look good. I decided to put a peach as a mouth. Milly used honey as hair and paige cut pineapples for eyes and ears.

For lunch our jobs were:
French toast: George and I.
Noodles: Milly.
Saveloys: JJ, Milly and Paige.
Presentation: Milly, Paige and I.

I was worried with the french toast because I have never made it before.
When I had made the mixture I ran outside with the bread and the mixture.
The first one we put on didn’t go well, it got burnt, but after awhile we got the hang of it. When I had the noodles and the french toast on the plate I was wondering why it was taking them so long with the saveloys. When I looked outside I caught them eating them. When I tasted them they were perfect.

For dinner our jobs were.
Potatoes: JJ, Milly and I.
Instant pudding: Milly and I.
Meat balls: George, Milly, JJ and I.
Honey glazed carrots: Me.

I had trouble with the honey glazed carrots because when I used a knife to spread it on it failed because it went everywhere. Then I realized I had spilt some honey on the plate so I just rubbed the carrots in it. When I was done I tried a meatball to see if it was done, it was a bit raw so we put them back. We ended up having a nice dinner. For the scores we came 4th.

Next time I would like to get 10/10 for one thing by not over cooking, under cooking and not putting the wrong things in. I would also like to get into the top 3 groups.

My team did very well. I would like to do this all over again. Hopefully I also get into the actual show. I will keep cooking and improving.
